Work Related Health Monitoring

HEARING TESTING
In workplaces where noise is a significant hazard the employer must eliminate the hazard if practicable, and where significant noise sources cannot be controlled, provide hearing protection and monitor the hearing of workers to ensure they are not sustaining damage to their hearing.

Our partner’s Occupational Health Nurses are all trained in hearing testing and the interpretation of the results. They can also provide education on the effects of noise on health to ensure individuals understand what they must do to reduce the risks of hearing loss. Hearing protection is also checked to ensure it is in good condition and that workers know how to use it correctly.

LUNG FUNCTION
In the workplace staff may encounter hazardous substances – either as part of a chemical process, or contaminants generated by certain work activities. Welding fumes, quarry dust, sawdust, and plant/animal aerosols are all examples of common air contaminants in the workplace. The masks and respirators worn to combat these are most effective if in good condition and used correctly. The employer is still required to monitor the health of individuals wearing this personal protective equipment by engaging qualified occupational health nurses to undertake lung function testing on their employees. A questionnaire relating to previous occupational exposure will be completed by each employee at the time of testing.

VISION SCREENING
Vision screening is important to ensure that your employees have visual acuity and colour vision perception adequate for the tasks that their job requires. Good vision is necessary for people to perform their work safely and comfortably.

Manual Handling Training

The objective of manual handling training is to inform employees of the health hazards of lifting and carrying weights and what they can do to reduce the potential for strains and sprains.

Training consists of a presentation and DVD followed by a practical session of lifting techniques. Where possible, the use of equipment/machinery onsite is able to be used to demonstrate correct lifting and moving techniques. Training time is approximately 1-1.5 hours, with a maximum of 10-15 trainees. Requires space or approx 1.5m per person.

Drug & Alcohol Testing
The Health and Safety in Employment Act amendments of 2002 have made employers responsible for managing hazardous behaviours in the workplace. These hazardous behaviours put all staff in a “Safety Sensitive” work environment at risk. A drug and alcohol testing programme helps employers ensure all employees behave safely and that any incident of unsafe behaviour is thoroughly investigated. Once a company policy has been established in consultation with employees the appropriate testing can be done. This may be at pre-employment, post incident, post accident, randomly or for reasonable cause. Testing can be carried out in the workplace or at our partner’s offices – whatever best suits the client.

Our partner nurses are accredited collectors and testers of samples for drug urine testing. Samples can be tested on-site or sent away to an accredited Laboratory for analysis. On-site instant testing is carried out in accordance with AS/NZ Standard 4308:2008.

Breath Alcohol testing is carried out in accordance with AS standard 3547-2000(Type 11) and is available on site or in-clinic. Results are available instantly.

These procedures are the “Gold Standard” that the law requires, ensuring that best practice testing procedures are best practice. Companies who do not use Gold Standard practices are very exposed to litigation.

Pre-Employment and Exit Health Assessments
Getting a suitable person for the job is what employers want. Part of that suitability is ensuring that the person has the physical capacity to perform the duties of the role, and that the tasks undertaken are not going to cause harm to the person. Pre- employment health assessments also enable a recording of baseline health information; particularly important when the job requires the person to be exposed to hazards such as noise or dust.

Pre-employments can include a variety of tests which vary for each company. The testing performed is role and task specific. It is important that each health assessment is structured to suit the employee’s work activities within the company. Our Partners are available to advise your company on appropriate pre-employment health procedures.

Exit assessments are done prior to an employee leaving the company, and this is a way of verifying that the person’s health has not been adversely affected by their employment. This protects the employer, and reassures the employee that their health has not been compromised during their employment.

Vaccinations
Vaccinations against Influenza, Hepatitis A+B , and Tetanus can be given by our specially trained Occupational Health Nurses. Influenza (more commonly known as the ‘flu’) is an illness that may affect many employees for a period of time and be contagious in the workplace – causing business interruption through sickness absence. Offering your employees the opportunity to participate in an autumn vaccination programme has proven cost benefits for companies.

Our partners can provide your employees with a brief presentation to dispel the myths around immunisation and to promote the benefits of influenza immunisation.

If your employees are exposed to the biohazards of Hepatitis A or B and vaccination is part of your hazard control programme, our partner is able to vaccinate your employee either on your site or at their office.

INFLUENZA
Influenza is a contagious disease, and can cause disruption in the workplace if spread amongst a company’s employees. We recommend influenza vaccines be provided annually to all staff. The quadrivalent vaccine is updated each year to provide protection against the four most common influenza strains currently in circulation.

Vaccinations are available in-clinic, and we can provide on-line access to our booking system. Alternatively for worksites with 10 or more employees requiring a vaccine, we can provide this service on-site.

A recommendation to encourage staff to have a Flu vaccine this year as a preventative measure and boost immunity against Coronavirus
